Phone Case Materials: TPU, Silicone, Plastic and Hybrids

Updated 21 September 2026. Common phone case materials include TPU, silicone, polycarbonate, leather, aramid fibre, metal and wood. Many cases combine materials rather than relying on one. The best choice depends on fit, construction, grip, finish and the way you use your phone—not simply the material name.

For a custom phone case, assess two things separately: the shell that holds the phone and the surface that carries your design. A striking print does not prove drop protection, while a protective shell does not guarantee a sharp print.

Seven phone case materials compared

Material Why it is used What to check
TPU A flexible thermoplastic used for frames and full cases. Fit, corner construction, finish and the particular material grade.
Silicone A soft-touch surface that can offer a grippy feel. The inner structure, fit and surface finish; softness alone does not establish protection.
Polycarbonate A rigid plastic used for shells and back panels. Edge coverage and the complete construction, not an assumption that every hard shell breaks on impact.
Leather A surface chosen for its feel and appearance, often over another shell. The underlying case, care instructions and water sensitivity.
Aramid fibre A composite often used for thin, lightweight designs. Coverage and test results for the finished case; a thin profile is not proof of impact performance.
Metal A rigid frame or decorative part. Compatibility with antennas, wireless charging and accessories.
Wood A distinctive natural surface, frequently combined with a separate frame. Backing, finish, moisture care and protection around the edges.

There are well-made and poorly made cases in more than one category. Claims that all silicone stretches within weeks, every plastic case shatters, or any thin case offers no protection are not a useful way to compare actual products.

What is TPU, and what are its properties?

TPU means thermoplastic polyurethane. It is a family of materials, not one fixed recipe. Flexibility, hardness, wear resistance and behaviour under heat or sunlight vary by grade. A single hardness range or temperature limit should not be presented as the specification for every TPU case.

BASF’s TPU overview describes different material properties and grades. That is general material information, not proof that RoboPixel uses a particular BASF formulation.

Does TPU turn yellow?

Clear cases can discolour with age and exposure. The rate depends on the formulation and conditions; there is no reliable universal “two or three months” deadline. Some TPU grades are developed for improved colour stability.

A black frame does not show the same transparent-yellow appearance as a clear one. That does not make it immune to ageing, scuffs or surface changes. Avoid interpreting “black TPU” as an unlimited guarantee that a case will always look new.

How a hybrid phone case works

A hybrid combines parts with different roles. RoboPixel’s Signature custom case uses a black TPU bumper and a rigid back panel for UV printing, with a stated 2.8 mm construction. The bumper surrounds the phone, while the back provides the design surface.

This explains the construction; it does not establish that every hybrid outperforms every silicone or hard-plastic case. Exact fit, camera clearance, screen-edge coverage and the way parts connect all matter. Start with the correct iPhone or Samsung Galaxy model.

What does a drop-test claim tell you?

RoboPixel advertises its Signature case as 3-metre drop tested. A height alone is not a complete test method and is not a promise that a phone will survive every fall. Surface, angle, phone model, number of drops and pass criteria affect what a result means.

If protection is the deciding factor, ask for those conditions and any available report before purchasing. This article does not present an independent test or claim military certification. Case thickness alone cannot be converted into a drop rating.

Choosing a surface for a custom print

A rigid back gives the artwork a stable printing surface. Print durability still depends on the ink, surface preparation, coating and use. “UV-printed” names a printing process; it does not by itself mean that an image can never fade, scratch or peel.

Inspect close-up photographs, avoid tiny important details near the camera opening and use an original image with sufficient detail. A low-resolution screenshot cannot gain missing detail simply by being enlarged. See how to design your own case for layout checks.

Practical checks before you buy

  • Confirm the full phone model, including Plus, Pro or Ultra where relevant.
  • Look at button access, camera openings and screen edges.
  • Check the particular charger, wallet, mount and screen protector you plan to use.
  • Look for stated test conditions rather than relying on adjectives.
  • Compare the total price, delivery and return conditions.

Wipe a case gently with a soft damp cloth and follow its care instructions. Avoid abrasive cleaning. Check fit again if the case is damaged or distorted. For magnetic accessories, read our MagSafe case guide.

Which material should you choose?

Choose the finished case that meets your needs, not a material ranking presented as universal fact. For personal artwork, RoboPixel offers the same custom-design routes on its available models. You can also browse RoboPixel Originals for a finished design.
